Men Made For More Podcast Episode 140: WIN (What’s Important Now)

[00:00:00] Dave: [00:00:00] Hey there mighty man. I'm your host, Dr. Dave Paczkowski founder of Men Made For More coaching, our business helps husbands level up their life. Their leadership and their legacy in marriage and in business. The purpose of this podcast is to bring together like-minded men that feel destined for big things in their life to provide you the resources and community that you need to lead yourself, your family and your business.

[00:00:26] If you've ever felt overwhelmed, frustrated, lost, or alone on your journey to a better and more purposeful life, you're in the right spot. You weren't designed to be average. So it's time to quit living that way today. I'm giving you permission to unlock your true potential and step into all that you were made for.

[00:00:45]What's up guys, welcome to today's episode of the men made for more podcast, stoked to be with you guys here today. And we are talking about the acronym WIN today. And what I mean by that what's [00:01:00] important now, and I'll get into exactly why that's so important to continue to have this acronym front of mind.

[00:01:08] Because as you grow, your opportunities are going to grow along with you. And this is a dangerous time. It's a, it's a fun time. It's a successful time as you, as you see growth, but it's also a dangerous time because your time starts to become more and more valuable and more people are going to want a piece of it.

[00:01:26] Most men struggle with prioritizing what's truly important versus chasing shiny objects and other things that might seem appealing in their work and in their personal lives. And today we're going to talk about why it's so important to keep the main thing, the main thing and how to win the day. And remember, that's what's important now.

[00:01:47] Now, this is, uh, this is something that's running rampant for, for society, for entrepreneurs, for all these people that are trying to level up much like yourself and [00:02:00] trying to focus on improving themselves personally, improving themselves in business. Is we, we get scattered, we start to, we start down one journey of saying, Oh, I want to, I want to do this thing, but then you hear the next person talk about how this next routine, this next thing, this next business opportunity is going to is going to change the change the world.

[00:02:20] So you start to get distracted and you start to get pulled away from what your main thing is. And then you find yourself getting watered down results. We only have so much energy. And so much time that we can push forward in a given day, a given activity. And if we don't, if we don't fully harness that, then we're going to get those water down results in the areas that matter the most.

[00:02:43] And unfortunately, guys, the areas that are maybe not urgent, but are the most important things like your relationships, things like your spiritual life, like your health, like the things in business that are really gonna going to cause growth. Those things are not going to be screaming the [00:03:00] loudest. So if you don't pull yourself back to what's important now what's important in this moment, you're going to find yourself distracted and not getting the results that I know you guys are capable of getting.

[00:03:10] And remember that good is the enemy of great. There's going to be lots of good. Good opportunities that come around, there's gonna be lots of, uh, good relationships, good, uh, business opportunities, you know, good new things that are going to going to be those, those shiny objects. And you have to really guard against good because saying yes to something that's good.

[00:03:33] Could be saying no to a thousand other opportunities, a thousand greats that might be, uh, might be out there if you don't over commit yourself. If you keep pulling yourself back to what's important in the moment. And also remember that priority is not meant to be plural priority was changed somewhere along the lines to priorities.

[00:03:52] And what's the top 10 priorities you have in your life priority is the one most important thing. And we can only have one priority in a [00:04:00] given moment in a given activity, in our Workday, in our, when we're at home with, with family, when we're trying to build relationships, there's only one priority. We can't have multiple priorities.

[00:04:10] We can't, uh, achieve all these multiple things at a given time. And that requires a. A balancing act of being able to move back and forth between priorities between those, those most important things. But you have to know in a given moment, what's important. Now I talked to guys that are trying to do so much at once.

[00:04:28] They're trying to build strength and lose fat, and they're trying to, uh, you know, chase one business opportunity and also build, build a podcast and build all these other things and just chase any possible opportunity. That's that's out there, but this is just distracting from. Really identifying what the most important thing is.

[00:04:46] And that involves us having to say no. And that involves us having to make some tough decisions. And I, uh, I know this firsthand from, uh, one of the top talk about specifically when I moved from, from one business to having multiple [00:05:00] businesses from starting, uh, just our physical therapy one and set out strength and performance to starting then made from our coaching.

[00:05:07] And this was a big shift and a wake up call in terms of, of this wind principle or this what's important now because. When I had one focus, we saw a lot of success. We sell a success in our PT business because it was just me working in, it was laser focused on what needed to be doing. And we saw a good degree of success and then have since brought on, uh, my wife's come on.

[00:05:30] Full-time we've, uh, been able to fortunate enough to hire employees and, uh, the. The priorities change. The what's what's important now changes from knowing one set blueprint of how it works to having to lead a team, having to still build that business and grow that business during a global pandemic.

[00:05:50] From adding a new business into it in hindsight, was it the smartest thing to do? Maybe, maybe not, but, uh, it was something I was super passionate about and [00:06:00] something I had been had thought about starting for a long time. So I dove into it, but that totally shifted the what's important in the moment because all of a sudden I had.

[00:06:11] No joke, hundreds of things that could be working on hundreds of ideas, there's plenty of stuff that I could be doing, but what really are those most important things that are going to help, help continue to build our physical therapy business? Help continue to build and build the impact and our business with members from our coaching.

[00:06:30] And then also maintain a strong with, with Lindsay, with family, friends, community, make sure our personal boundaries are there. What are the most important things that need to be doing for that? Because I found out I was chasing many good opportunities, but missing out on real great progress in the areas.

[00:06:46] Cause I wasn't focusing on the things that carry the most weight, those true needle movers. And until I got back to practicing what I preach, getting out, getting back to getting crystal clear on the things that are [00:07:00] really going to move us forward this year, this quarter, this month, this week today.

[00:07:05] That's when we started to get, get some traction back in terms of managing multiple businesses, managing our personal lives and doing all these things that, uh, we want to grow in and we feel called to, to build and to grow and, and to chase that impact. And, uh, guys, this is, this is so important. I want to talk about specifically some tactical things you guys can be doing to apply this to your daily lives, your businesses, your work, your personal lives, your relationships.

[00:07:33] And, uh, first thing is you have to start with the end in mind, and we talk about this a lot because it's important. You need to cast that vision, cast a big vision and know what the, no, what the end goal is. And I, I encourage you to, you know, start, start broader, look at what is, what does business look like?

[00:07:52] What does work life look like? What does my relationships look like? What's my spiritual life. What's my health cast. This big vision, five years from now, 10 [00:08:00] years from now. Think about what the, what the end goal is because we have to know what we want to be working towards. In order to actually see, see the success and the results that we want.

[00:08:12] If we don't know where we're going, it's going to make it really hard to know what's important in the moment, because we have no idea where we're heading. We can work on anything and will it get us progress? Maybe, maybe not, but you can, you can separate this into each area of your life or you can combine it into everything.

[00:08:27] But that first thing is starting with the end in mind. Second thing, start to reverse engineer. And this is that goal setting process. We talk about all the time we talk about with all of our clients in terms of how do we take this big vision and how do we start to make it reality? How do we start to bias?

[00:08:43] Action. Cause it's one thing to cast a big vision, but we have to know the steps needed to get us into that mode of action and meaningful, purposeful action. That's going to move us closer to that. So start to reverse engineer, say, Hey, this is what I want to do in five years. What does that look like in three years?

[00:09:00] [00:08:59] What does that mean? I have to get done this year. What does that mean for this quarter? This month? Okay. This week, what does that mean today? And this is bringing back that what's important now principle that when principal, because as soon as you can get clear on this. And it's just executing the game plan.

[00:09:15] You've already done the work of, of knowing what it is, and you're going to have to continue to refine and review and adjust those things. But you have to be able to stick to the plan. If you know the big vision you reverse engineered into what you need to be doing this quarter this month, this week today, and guys it's on you to just, uh, just to execute.

[00:09:34] And when you know that though, The hard work is the hard work is really, is really done if you're on the right path and you're not going to get it right the first time, but once you start to get good at this, then it's just executing, reviewing, tweaking a little bit, but that'll bring you into what's important now.

[00:09:49] So when that new opportunity comes in, you have the plan in front of you, then it, then the choices is there of, is this really a better opportunity? Or is this something that's just screaming louder right now? [00:10:00] So after you start with the end of mine, you reverse engineer your, uh, the process to get you there all the way back to what you need to be doing today, their thing right out and review daily.

[00:10:11] What those, what those things are, what is most important today? You'll only have a finite amount of time, a finite amount of energy in today to focus on something. So don't get overwhelmed, lay out your week. And lay out your day, say, Hey, what is, what is realistic that I can get done today? And then write it out, write down.

[00:10:28] We talked about no fail to do lists, um, at least one thing, star, one thing that you need to get done today, I wouldn't go more than more than three things. If you're chasing the right things and review this every single day, and this will just continue to refine and sharpen your focus of what you need to be doing so that when that.

[00:10:45] New email comes in when that new business opportunity comes in, you can see it in the proper lens because you know what needs to get done today. And it's this dance of, of looking at what needs to get done today and looking at, do I need to adjust the longer-term vision at all? [00:11:00] And that's something we, we break down with our coaching clients all the time, because it's a, it's a challenging dance to be able to go back and forth on.

[00:11:06] But if you're not, if you're getting distracted in the day-to-day, it doesn't matter what kind of vision you have, because you're not going to be able to see the meaningful progress and make the momentum that I know you guys want. Four thing. Last thing here, train yourself to say no first and only reverse it with a yes.

[00:11:23] When it's the right opportunity. So you guys need to learn to make no, your default, once you have this clear plan, once you know what you're saying yes. To, which is your long-term vision, then you have to say no to all those things that are going to pull you a little bit off track that are going to.

[00:11:37] Maybe be appealing in the short term might be a, you know, a little better financial bump, but it might throw off your long-term vision. You can't say yes to a small financial bump only to sacrifice your health and your relationship and your marriage and, uh, other long-term business opportunities. So make sure you guys are aware of this and make sure you can default to saying no first, but if you think [00:12:00] on it and you reflect on it, and it really is something that you're like, Hey, there's.

[00:12:03] There's something to this. I, I really should pursue this. And if it's in line with your, with your vision, then reverse it to a yes. But make no the default versus so many people out there. Uh, yes. As the default, it's always like, sure. Yeah. I'll take that. Yeah, let's do that. Yes. Yes. Yes. And then we realized that our schedule is full with things that might, might not be as, as meaningful as what we could be in terms of the relationships we're investing in the, uh, the work we're doing.

[00:12:28] So make sure you make no the default and then reverse with a yes. So quick recap here, guys. Start with the end in mind, reverse engineer your year, your quarter, your month, your week, your day, third thing, write it out and review it daily. Write these things out, physically, write them out so that you can hold yourself accountable.

[00:12:46] And then four thing, train yourself to say no first and then only reverse it with a yes. When it really is the right opportunity. So your takeaway for today, guys, your action step is to. Get started on, on getting [00:13:00] back to the basics, getting back to the things that, that you know are going to really push things forward.

[00:13:04] Write those out, write that plan out if you haven't already and write those things out daily. And if you need a little post-it on your, on your, uh, your background or your phone, that just says when to remind you to focus on what's important. Now I encourage you to, to do that if you need that, that trigger or that reminder.
